Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth Appointed as 31st Chief of the Indian Army, to Assume Command on June 30
Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been appointed as the 31st Chief of the Indian Army and will assume charge on June 30, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi. With nearly 40 years of service, extensive command experience, and prestigious military honors, he will lead the Indian Army until August 31, 2028.
Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth is presently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. According to the official timeline, his tenure as the Army Chief will continue until August 31, 2028.
Commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1986, Lieutenant General Seth brings nearly 40 years of extensive military experience. He has commanded and served in multiple sensitive and strategically significant regions, including desert sectors, Jammu and Kashmir, and the Western Front.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, he has further strengthened his professional military education through the Defence Services Staff College and the Army War College. He has also undergone advanced international training at the Collège Interarmées de Défense in France and the Naval Postgraduate School in the United States.
In his distinguished career, Lieutenant General Seth assumed command of the South Western Command on November 1, 2023, succeeding Lieutenant General B. S. Raju following his retirement on October 31, 2023. His operational experience also includes serving as Commander of the XXI Strike Corps, General Officer Commanding of the Delhi Area, and holding key appointments at Army Headquarters related to capability development. He has also served in a United Nations mission in Angola. Subsequently, he is reported to have led the Southern Command as part of his senior leadership assignments before taking up the role of Vice Chief of the Army Staff on April 1, 2026.
Lieutenant General Seth’s career has been marked by distinguished academic and professional achievements. He secured first rank in the Junior Command Course and received the Best All-Round Student Officer Medal at the Defence Services Staff College. His service has been recognized with some of the highest military honors, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).
With his appointment, the Indian Army is set to witness a new phase of leadership continuity and strategic experience at its highest level.
